Story By John Kruger
The drizzle cleared just in time for the Melrose Ute Muster in the shadow of Mt Remarkable in South Australia’s Flinders Ranges in April. Held as part of the Rock the Mount festival, which included a Lee Kernaghan concert, the muster weekend was a great success. Many ute owners camped out overnight under massive gum trees at the oval and campgrounds near the base of the mountain, which set a stunning backdrop to the event. Others arrived in the cool morning air for judging, and the competition was evenly distributed throughout the different classes. Cheerful muster organiser Andrew Walter, from Melrose, had everything running smoothly. Kacie Robertson, from the nearby farming community of Wilmington, is keener than most. She has just bought a ute and she’s hooked on musters but there’s just one catch – she’s only 16 and hasn’t yet got her license. Luckily Mum dropped her off.
