Bagpipes and tartan keep Scottish traditions alive in the Riverina, NSW.
Story By Fiona Lake
Every second Tuesday for six months of last year, a group of Riverina blokes made an overnight round trip to Canberra that would make their stoic Scottish forebears proud. Setting off at 2.30pm, Leeton Pipe Band members Neil Macauslan, David Holt and John Stewart drove to Canberra, en route picking up Neil’s brother Ian in Wagga Wagga. They’d attend the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo practice with the Australian Federal Police Pipes and Drums (AFPPD) from 7 to 10pm, and return home, arriving just a few hours before having to get up to go to work.
