When Joyce and Michael Smith’s daughter Ochre stayed at Haileybury Rendall School’s boarding house during an excursion, they hardly could have expected what happened next. “When Ochre returned home, she told us she wanted to go [there] … because the school and the boarding house were so good,” Joyce says.
The family hails from Borroloola, more than 700km south-east of Darwin. In 2019, when Ochre was in year 7, she was enrolled at Haileybury Rendall School (HRS). Her brother Cooper followed the next year.
Recognised in the 2022 Australian Education Awards as the boarding school of the year, HRS has been adaptable to Ochre’s learning difference of having dyslexia, Joyce says. “HRS has a unique approach that is very inviting and has different ways for students to learn and achieve.”
